Ba'al had always wanted to meet a dragon and learned one had to be careful what they wished for. As far as first impression went he no longer looked at them with a naive viewpoint as he use to. They were savage beasts. Being intelligent only made them all the more dangerous and unpredictable.
He walked beside a older heavily armored man he had come across fighting a dragon. The young adventurer assisted the best he could but in the end it was his companion that had slayed the beast. Later he learned the warrior was from an order of protectors as old as the dragon riders themselves. Ba'al had heard of them and out of curiosity went along with the man he came to call Solomon.
"So is this dragon slaying thing legal?" Ba'al asked the shifter. Solomon replied in a foreign exotic accent. "You forget we were created in the hay days of the riders to combat any that posed a threat to the people of this land. Yes it is authorized by these lands leaders. But only for those who's new found power has turned there hearts bad. Do not make the mistake of thinking we go out killing any dragon and rider we see. We have dragons and riders in our order. Humans, shifters, peasants, even elven princes are among our ranks. All brothers and sisters. We are a family. And you are more then welcome to join that family. You will find purpose in your life. Adventure and glory will be yours in its service. Though don't expect the people of this land to be very grateful. Having shifters in your ranks and calling them brothers and sisters in frowned on"
So far this order was very appealing. But still Ba'al wondered about some things and asked. "Who exactly do we work for?" This question made the older shifter stop walking and look at the young Ba'al with a look of insult. "Work for? You really don't know do you?" Seeing Ba'al shake his head Solomon resumed walking. "Then I will forgive your question and end your ignorance now. We are not slaves to politics. Our fealty is to the people of this land. Not nobles or kings. I could give a long and exhausting explanation. But the shorter answer is we are peacekeepers led by a grandmaster."
Stopping at that for an awkward pause the shifter inquired. "Still interested boy?" Ba'al found the tale of these guardians of the people to be a romantic notion. Like how children circled around village fires with fascinated eyes at old war story's. His answer was pretty clear. "Absolutely!" The shifter in full body armor chuckled. "Good, we need new bloods for the training grounds. When we get to the mountain stay out of harms way and use your ash wood bow. Your not properly equipped and don't have training. I will not have you die a foolish death. From the reports we have gotten there is a feral dragon..... a man eater making its lair there. The rising death toll of would be riders is unacceptable."
As much as he wanted to join this order. For a moment he felt trepidation. But only for a moment. If slaying a blood thirsty dragon would save lives. It was the right thing to do. The thought brought back memories of something his father use to say. "The hard right over the easy wrong"
